Keeping it Crafty

Keeping it Crafty

About the Program

Do you like crafting and want to engage with like-minded people? Then this group might be for you.

This program is designed to create a sense of community and connection amongst autistic peers. All sessions are conducted face-to-face in Albury, facilitated by a Neurodivergent Therapy Assistant (TA) with guidance from our practitioner. Each group is limited to 5 participants to maintain a comfortable and inclusive space. Please note that an additional support worker may also attend.

How is it run?

The program focuses on promoting and encouraging social interaction and inclusion through crafting activities. If a participant finds any activity challenging due to motor or communication differences, we encourage you to let us know so an alternative program can be tailored to meet their needs. We also offer additional activities for sensory regulation or a break when needed.

Each session will have one of the following main activity, and some additional smaller activities.

  • Drawing and colouring, or sharing your favourite craft
  • Origami
  • Perler beads
  • Lego
  • Bracelet braiding
  • Jewellery making
  • Bring your own craft

This program celebrates creativity, collaboration, and the joy of crafting in a supportive environment

About Little Black Duck Social Connection Groups

Research indicates that autistic people feel disconnected from the community and don’t experience a sense of social resonance until they meet other autistic people. The most current research into autistic social interactions indicates socialising with other autistic people is easier and beneficial to long term wellbeing and self-identity.

Little Black Duck social connection groups are not designed to teach neuro normative social skills, they’re designed to created social resonance and connection within the autistic community

The Space

Group sessions will be held in a detached room behind the main office of the Develop and Grow Building. Toilets are located in the main building. If you need a break—whether sensory or otherwise—various items will be available for your use during the session.

The space also includes an outdoor area, which is fenced but not fully secure (the gates are easily accessible), should anyone wish to get some fresh air or move around. For seating, there is a couch, a spin chair, an armchair, and pillows, along with several types of coffee tables and a main desk. The room features a split system for temperature control and some natural light, although artificial lighting may be necessary depending on the time of day. The flooring consists of floating floorboards.
